British Columbia Carnivals and Festivals

From the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountain peaks

BC's Festival Scene

British Columbia's festival landscape is as diverse as its geography. The province stretches from the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountains, from the mild climate of the Lower Mainland to the cold winters of the northern interior, and its carnivals and festivals reflect this range. The Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver anchors the summer fair season, but BC's festival calendar extends into every corner of the province, with agricultural fairs, cultural celebrations, winter festivals, and community events that showcase the distinct character of each region.

Vancouver and the Lower Mainland host the province's largest events, including the PNE, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, the celebration of light fireworks competition, and numerous cultural festivals reflecting the city's diverse population. The city's Asian communities, among the largest in North America, contribute festivals and celebrations that add a dimension to BC's cultural calendar that is unique in Canada.

The BC interior has a strong agricultural fair tradition, with the Okanagan and Fraser Valley regions hosting harvest festivals, wine festivals, and fall fairs that celebrate the province's farming heritage. The interior also hosts rodeos and stampedes that reflect the cowboy culture of the Cariboo and Chilcotin regions, giving BC a Western heritage that sometimes surprises visitors who associate the province primarily with the coast.

Mountain towns like Whistler, Revelstoke, and Fernie host winter festivals that combine ski culture with community celebration. BC's mild coastal climate means that even winter events in the Lower Mainland have a different character than their prairie counterparts, with temperatures that rarely drop below minus-five and a festival culture that leans toward outdoor markets and cultural events rather than snow sculptures and ice fishing.

From the first salmon runs celebrated by Indigenous communities to the autumn apple festivals of the Okanagan, BC's festival calendar reflects a province that finds reasons to celebrate year-round.
