Prince Edward Island Festivals

Island celebrations from Old Home Week to community fairs

PEI's Festival Calendar

Prince Edward Island may be Canada's smallest province, but its festival calendar is remarkably full for an island of 170,000 people. PEI's compact geography, strong agricultural heritage, and tight-knit communities create an environment where festivals and fairs are central to social life. The provincial exhibition tradition dates back to the 1800s, and community celebrations have been bringing Islanders together through every season for generations.

Old Home Week in Charlottetown is the island's signature event, a multi-day celebration that combines the provincial exhibition with harness racing at Red Shores Racetrack, concerts, a midway, and the Gold Cup and Saucer race that is the highlight of the PEI harness racing season. Old Home Week has been held since the late 1800s and is deeply woven into island culture. For many Islanders who have moved away, Old Home Week is the occasion that brings them back for an annual reunion.

Harness racing holds a special place in PEI's sporting culture that is unique in Canada. The province has produced world-class standardbred horses and drivers, and the racetracks in Charlottetown and Summerside are community gathering points throughout the season. During Old Home Week, the Gold Cup and Saucer race draws the largest crowds of the year and generates the kind of excitement that horse racing rarely achieves in other Canadian provinces.

Community fairs across the island celebrate PEI's agricultural heritage. The provincial and county exhibitions feature livestock judging, crop displays, baking competitions, and the midway rides that are a highlight for island children. These fairs tend to be intimate events where exhibitors and attendees know each other, giving them a warmth and authenticity that larger urban fairs cannot replicate.

PEI's cultural festivals celebrate the island's diverse heritage, from Acadian festivals along the Evangeline coast to Celtic celebrations in the eastern communities. The Charlottetown Festival, centred on the Confederation Centre of the Arts, celebrates the island's connection to Canadian confederation through theatre, music, and cultural programming. The island's booming tourism industry, driven by Anne of Green Gables and the beautiful beaches, adds international visitors to the mix during summer festival season.

Despite its small size, PEI demonstrates that a province does not need a large population or a major city to sustain a vibrant festival culture. What it needs is strong community bonds, pride in local traditions, and a willingness to come together and celebrate. PEI has all three in abundance.
